Monotony
December 3, 2018 Dan Raimondi

Some people like to have a routine.  It’s one way to reduce how much mental energy goes towards unimportant decisions, such as what to wear.

Change can also be valuable. Tweaking a variable in your program might be what gets you through a plateau. More importantly, it might be what breaks up the monotony of your workouts.

The question isn’t either stay the same or do something different. The question is to what degree should you change?

It might be as simple as trying a new rep range. If you always have done sets of 10 reps, try sets of 8. It might be a small switch on the exercise itself. If you always bench press by touching your chest with a slight “bounce”, try pausing all of your reps.

Having a routine is valuable, but injecting some variation can also be beneficial. It can reduce the monotony of a program. If you do the same exercises, sets, and reps for years on end, you’ll probably get burned out. And, after all, we’re in this for the long haul, right?
