Sit to Stand
March 19, 2018 Dan Raimondi

Do the words squat, press, and deadlift intimidate you? If I told you on your first day we’d teach you these movements, would it push you away? Reframing these exercises from squat, deadlift, and press into something less intimidating might help you understand what it is we’re trying to do. This came up in a conversation recently on the Barbell Medicine Facebook group and something I also heard Dr. Darin Deaton talk about at the 2017 SSCAC. So, if you those words intimidate you, let’s reframe our mindset:

Instead of squatting, we’re going to practice sitting down and standing up.

Instead of pressing, we’re going to practice putting objects overhead.

Instead of deadlifting, we’re going to practice picking things up from the floor.

If squats, presses, and deadlifts cause anxiety, rename/reframe the exercise. The name isn’t as important as is it’s relevance to everyday life.
