Train the general fitness characteristics. Coach Tsypkin wrote a good piece on his blog about how to approach strength and conditioning for sports. It’s tempting to try and make the weight room exercises look like the sport. The problem is that the sport is more than just a series of movements and energy systems. There is a tactical element, a technical element, opponents(usually), teammates, and a whole bunch of other things to think of. Instead, train a general trait like strength. Use your sport to practice your craft, but avoid making your general training mimic the sport.
