How do you talk with yourself? What story are you telling? “I’m too old to get stronger.” “I can’t train because my back hurts.” “This is just how it is in life.” Is the inner voice generally negative, with little hope of change? What you tell yourself has a major impact on how you physically, emotionally, and psychologically feel. If you go into the gym thinking about your achy knees you’ll probably “notice” them more. If you have a history of back pain and you tell yourself that certain exercises are dangerous than you might begin to develop a fear of that certain movement (kinesiophobia). The best part is that you are in control of your story. If you don’t like the way it’s currently being written, you can change it. It’ll take work, and it won’t be easy. But you are the driver of the car, and always telling yourself what’s negative in your life is a surefire way to keep spinning your tires.
